The book for November 2019 is the book that changed my life and therefore, I believe the best text to send the Sattva Centre Book Club off on its maiden voyage. I first read the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra when I was in my late teens/early twenties. I was at a point in my life where I desperately needed positive direction, some guidance on how to find contentment but also how to lead a life connected to my born strengths and purpose.
Deepak Chopra’s simple words discussing complex ideas made spirituality for me relevant, palatable and a tangible practice – I have never looked back. I believe with all my heart, that if you are to understand and implement these seven laws into your life, your connection to Self will increase, contentment will flourish and your sense of purpose undeniable.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR USING THIS TEXT
I highly recommend reading this text, one law per day for a week. Read each law first thing in the morning as part of your routine. Next, read the commitments at the end of each chapter that Deepak Chopra has outlined and practice it during the day ahead. Then, begin to practice it amongst every moment and every day that you can. Sometimes you need to re-read the chapters or I quite often, wrote the commitments on a small post-it notes and left it above my desk, on my vanity mirror or fridge as little reminders. The Chopra Center website outlines a lovely daily schedule and summary for each law as adapted below for you to try.
SUNDAY - THE LAW OF PURE POTENTIALITY
This law stresses the importance of taking time every day to be silent, to be still, in order to understand and connect with the Universal consciousness of all living things. This law assists us to practice non-judgement.
MONDAY - THE LAW OF GIVING
A practice in bringing a gift with you for every person you meet during your day – this can be a kind word, some food to share or a bunch of flowers. This practice also marks the importance of receiving gifts graciously too – Deepak Chopra refers to this as circulating the wealth through genuine giving and receiving between all living beings.
TUESDAY - THE LAW OF KARMA
This is a big law to digest (I recommend a second read) but in short, this law reminds us that every action generates a force that returns to us in like-kind.
WEDNESDAY - THE LAW OF LEAST EFFORT
This law questions us to accept everything – people, situations and events as they need to occur. It teaches you to take responsibility for your actions and your role in events as they play out. However, with this law, you will learn to relinquish control over the destiny of others or to defend your point of view.
THURSDAY - THE LAW OF INTENTION & DESIRE
Deepak Chopra outlines that the intention and desires we all harbour has in-built mechanics for its fulfilment. When we outline and work towards our desires, we are on the path to our life’s purpose. The big challenge within this law is to realise with 100% acceptance that when our desires are not met, the Universe has made it this way – there is always a reason.
FRIDAY - THE LAW OF DETACHMENT
This law outlines the importance of allowing yourself and others the freedom to be who they are. Do not force situations or solutions – they will spontaneously emerge when the timing is right. It is understanding that uncertainty is essential and constant, being the only path to our long-term freedom.
SATURDAY - THE LAW OF DHARMA
If you understand Dharma, you understand the unique gifts you have been given and how best to serve humanity through this medium. Using your gifts and talents in service to others also brings immense fulfilment and depth to your life on every level.
