Salt gets a bad rep within our modern understanding of food.
However in Ayurveda, salt is seen as one of the 6 tastes and is highly respected for maintaining optimum health. From this perspective, Ayurveda considers salt to enhance the taste and potency of other foods, it aids in digestive function and assists our body to properly eliminate waste.
Again, like anything though, salt should be taken in moderation and be of high quality and nutrient dense. Pink Himalayan rock salt is considered an optimum salt to add to your food as it keeps all three doshas happy and digests well.
As a general salt rule, avoid the salty substances in processed food (that stuff will make you crook) and add high quality salt in small amounts to your daily cooking. Salt is valuable and necessary to our diets, just choose the right ways to consume it.
